Pick Your Charging Type (AKA Charging Level)

If you don’t have a lot of info handy on the types of EV chargers, you’ll want to read up here. Just to be clear, most home car charging systems are going to be Level 1 or Level 2. Here’s some facts:

• Level 1 EV charging is done from a standard 110V plug. This will take a few days to fully charge your car because you only get a few miles of charge every hour.
• However, if you pick Level 2 EV charging, you can charge your car in just a few hours. You’ll often get 60 to 200 miles of range in just 20 to 30 minutes with Level 2 DC charging. This is done through a special 240V outlet. If you’ve got a “dryer plug,” you’re already wired for 240V.

Hiring an Electrician

If you need to get 220V wiring installed in your house, you’ll want to call an electrician. You’ll talk to them about power consumption and adding EV charging to your home. You can have them install a 240V plug or add a hardwired circuit into the power panel. Modern homes can get this done for a few hundred bucks, but if you’ve got an older home, you can expect to pay upwards of $1,000.
