How to Check Transmission Fluid

Changing transmission fluid

How often do you check your transmission fluid? And how to check your transmission fluid? Getting your transmission fluid checked on a regular basis can help prevent maintenance issues before they become serious. Your car’s transmission is the part that propels it forward, so it’s important to stay up-to-date on routine maintenance, such as checking transmission fluid. Not sure how to measure the transmission fluid level in your new or used vehicle? Anderson Auto Group is here to help! Read on to learn how to get transmission fluid help.

How to Check Transmission Fluid: Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these directions on how to check transmission fluid at home. If you need any more transmission fluid help, contact our team at Anderson Auto Group:

  1. Turn the engine on for a few minutes before you start. The engine needs to be warmed up to properly check the level, and make sure your car is in park before getting out and opening the hood.
  2. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. On front-wheel-drive cars, it’s usually located to the right of the oil dipstick. You can check your owner’s manual if you’re having trouble finding it.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid, moving it around between your thumb and forefinger. The fluid should be nearly clear, with a pink hue. If it looks dirty or gives off a burnt smell, take it to a service center for replacement.
  4. Use a rag to wipe off the dipstick. Then insert it back into the vehicle. Pull it out again and check the level. If it’s under the “Full” marking, you’ll need to add more.
  5. Use a funnel to bring the fluid level up to the right spot. Be sure not to overfill it.

If you run into any issues, feel free to check in with our local Anderson Auto Group service center around Bullhead City and Hemet.

Checking the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

If there’s no dipstick under the hood, you may have a sealed transmission. A sealed transmission means there’s no dipstick with which you can measure the transmission fluid level. If your car has a sealed transmission, don’t attempt to check its fluid level; you may damage it as a result. Instead, come to our service team and we will gladly check the transmission fluid level when you bring your car in for service.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid: Sealed Transmission

A sealed transmission is built to limit the amount of wasted transmission fluid and save you money in the long run.Issues can still spring up and the fluid will eventually need to be replaced. Keep an eye out for the following red flags, which indicate a problem with your sealed transmission and that it’s time to get transmission fluid help:

  • You can hear strange noises when the gears change.
  • The gears hesitate before changing.
  • During acceleration, there’s a noticeable delay when the gears shift.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

You should check the main fluid levels of your car monthly, including: checking your transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and engine oil. As always, you can consult your owner’s manual for a more specific maintenance schedule.
